Hi I'm Lou manfredini Aces Home expert In this video we're going to talk about Rivets specifically how do they work now A rivet when it was invented was really A hot rivet okay there were these molten Hot pieces of iron that had a formed cap On one side and they would grab it with A pair of tongs and put it inside a Pre-drilled hole and then they would Form the other side with like a hammer Or a Pneumatic tool while it was still Red hot and it would press together as The metal cooled it contracted and made It super tight think about it the Eiffel Tower it's all riveted together and it's Still standing all these years later It's a very affected method of joining Two pieces of material together now the Modern rivet something that you would Use well that gets used with what's Called a rivet gun there's no molten hot Steel for everyday use of a rivet gun Rivets come in many different sizes Diameters they come in different Materials and the tool itself what it Does is there's a shaft on the end of The rivet portion a pre-drilled hole That lines up with the size of the rivet Is created the rivet goes in that hole And then you squeeze the tool several Times and as you do that it sort of Forms the other side of the rivet Ultimately when you squeeze the rivet Tool to the full compression it snaps
